It’s time to stop the tax on womanhood. Period.
It’s a galling fact. Thanks to the price of basic sanitary products which are hiked yet further by the unjust ‘Tampon Tax’, thousands of women and girls across the UK are unable to afford the goods they need to stem the flow of their monthly bleeds. Many often resort to the use of tissues and socks, risking yet further pain and infection.
Research results by the charity Plan International released in October 2017, suggests that one in 10 girls and women – aged between 14 and 21 – in the UK has been affected by period poverty at some point in their lives. And the distribution of sanitary products by the nation’s food banks are as great a lifesaver as the foods they distribute.
In an effort to end this economic injustice faced by all women and girls, the #FreePeriods movement wants to safeguard access to free sanitary products for girls in school who qualify for free school meals.
It’s a first step in the long road ahead to ending the economic burdens placed on women’s physical needs everywhere.
